Volkswagen is the latest auto brand to secure Tesla electric-vehicle charger access for its consumers.

The Tesla-developed North American Charging System will significantly increase the number of public chargers VW drivers can tap. VW says the access opens up 25,000 fast chargers to VW model charging.

VW EV drivers will get access to the network starting Nov. 18, the German automaker said.

It will sell $200 VW-approved adapters through its dealerships and online to facilitate the charging. Original owners of the 2025 versions of its EVs can get a $100 rebate within certain parameters. VW said the adapters are compatible only with DC fast chargers and not levels 1 and 2 AC chargers, including home chargers and Tesla “Destination Chargers.”

The company’s EV lineup currently consists of the ID.4 compact crossover SUV and the ID.Buzz micro bus.

The new charger access adds to more than 5,000 fast chargers already usable for VWs on the Electrify America charger network, the company said.

“This is great news for our EV owners,” said Petar Danilovic, senior vice president, product marketing and strategy for Volkswagen of America. “This makes life much more convenient, whether you are taking a road trip or you rely on public charging should home charging not be an option.”
