In the European new-car market, electric-vehicle registrations are almost toe-to-toe with internal combustion engines in market share.

According to Jato Dynamics, EV registrations in June climbed to over 359,000 units, reaching a market share of about 26%, a new high for the year. Gas-powered vehicles’ market share dropped to 27%.

That's in stark contrast to the June U.S. new-car market, where EVs represented only a 7% share, down nearly 3% year-over-year, and gas vehicles controlled the market at nearly 75%.

In Europe, plug-in hybrids and regular hybrids each rose 24% in market share. Meanwhile, mild hybrids, which use a small battery and electric motor to assist a gas-powered engine without the ability to drive on electric power alone, remained relatively flat in market share, overtaken by the rise in fully electric models.

Europe’s largest market, Germany, saw a 14% increase in overall registrations with strong demand for EVs, PHEVs and HEVs. But in Italy and Spain, MHEVs and HEVs were the dominant powertrains.

According to Jato, northern and western Europe are the EV adoption leaders while southern and eastern markets lean toward MHEVs and HEVs.

The Tesla Model Y was the most registered new car in Europe for the month, but Volkswagen remained its best-selling brand overall.
