Minivans, of all vehicles, along with SUVs, stand out when it comes to drivers’ getting behind the wheel high, according to new research.

Though the average person might suspect sports car drivers to be among the worst offenders when it comes to driving impaired, the Insurify study found that the less-conspicuous models dominated the dubious distinction, their drivers up to 11 times more likely to get a DUI than the average.

It looked at 2024 insurance quotes to arrive at the 10 most common models involved when drivers are charged with driving under the influence. Most on the list – eight – are U.S.-made.

Two Buick subcompact SUVs top the list, the Envista first with 72 DUIs per 1,000 drivers, followed by the Encore GX, with about 59 per 1,000. The compact electric Chevrolet Bolt car rounds out the top three at about 41 per 1,000.

Insurify cited National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data that show 32% of traffic deaths involve impaired drivers. It said almost a million Americans are charged with a DUI each year, according to Centers for Disease Control data, and those are just the ones who get caught.

Drivers with DUIs pay about 40% more for full-coverage auto insurance than those with none, the insurance comparison shopping website said.

The rest of the top 10 models are the Chevrolet Astro minivan, with about 30 DUIs per 1,00 drivers; the Chevrolet Blazer SUV and the Jaguar XF car, with about 28 per 1,000; the Buick Enclave SUV at about 23 per 1,000; and the Volkswagen New Beetle, Chrysler Pacifica minivan and Ford Bronco at about 17 per 1,000.
