Missed Maintenance Creates Opportunity
As families get back on the road and into daily school routines, service drives have an opportunity to capture customers who are behind on recommended vehicle maintenance.

Car owners who get their car serviced at the dealership are more likely to buy their next car from it.

The latest Carfax data revealed that one in four U.S. drivers are behind on recommended vehicle maintenance, presenting a real opportunity for dealership service drives as millions of families return to daily commutes and after-school activities.
In fact, the majority of states – 38 – have at least one in four drivers behind on recommended maintenance. The state with the highest percentage is Mississippi at 31%. Virginia, Texas, Alabama and Georgia follow, each with 27%.
“Keeping up with recommended maintenance is one of the best ways drivers can protect themselves, their families, and their investment,” said Carfax Chief Product Officer Paul Nadjarian.
Where drivers go for their maintenance and repairs has shifted in the last few years. According to a 2025 study by Cox Automotive, dealers handled 12% fewer service visits than they did in 2018 as customers increasingly chose independent repair shops or quick oil change providers.
That ultimately hurts a dealership’s retention rate. The same study found that car owners who get their cars serviced at the dealership are more likely to buy their next car from it.
Cox recommends dealerships focus on transparent pricing, easy scheduling, and flexible service options while embracing digital tools that can help optimize their processes.
