A coating technology designed to protect vehicle electronics from damage may soon be applied to exteriors to shield paint from grime, according to a Car Magazine interview with executives of the Massachusetts company.

Actnano, which the likes of BMW and Porsche have invested in, produces nanocoating surface-protection products for vehicles and consumer electronics. Its protectants are also used by Tesla to shield technology features like driver-assist systems.

The company’s CEO demonstrated the material for the magazine, showing that it sealed a paper towel from absorbing drops of water.

Taymur Ahmad told the publication that the product will next be used to seal vehicle paint and even window glass, as well as valuables produced by other industries.

Actanano’s chief technology officer said the material will act like a “second see-through skin,” protecting a vehicle from water and from dirt with its self-cleaning properties, even defogging windows. He said that application could be made available in the next two years.
