The Biden administration is poised to tighten vehicle emissions limits in its latest effort to curb pollution, news reports say, citing anonymous sources speaking ahead of an official announcement.

The stricter rules would take effect for model year 2027 and stretch through the 2032 model year, reports indicate.

Tightened restrictions are aimed at accelerated electric-vehicle adoption. The administration has already started investing in expansion of the country’s EV charging infrastructure, building the U.S. EV industrial plant, and encouraging consumers to switch to EVs with recently introduced tax breaks.

The coming rule changes, expected Wednesday, are the strictest ever introduced by the Environmental Protection Agency on vehicle emissions.

EV adoption has been slow in the U.S. but has been growing as carmakers expand their EV lineups and EV makers engage in a price war started by market leader Tesla with a series of price cuts it started in January, on top of the federal tax credits.

The Biden administration has set a target of half of new-vehicle sales to be EVs by 2030.

But carmakers have pressed for more gradual rule tightening, saying faster change isn’t achievable.
