Toyota is recalling 12,600 2022 and 2023 Corolla Cross vehicles in the U.S. because of a problem with the inspection process specified by Toyota.

According to the company, the inspection may not have identified certain vehicles requiring a remedy for faulty airbag operation. Without the remedy, it says the front passenger airbag may not deploy as designed because of a manufacturing error in the instrument panel where the airbag is located. Consequently, the vehicles may fail to meet specific federal standards, potentially heightening the risk of injury in an accident, Toyota said.

Toyota dealers will reinspect the vehicles using an enhanced process and provide a free replacement of the instrument panel if required, Toyota said.

The automaker will notify owners of the involved vehicles by mid-February. Toyota advises against anyone riding in the front passenger seat of an effected vehicle until it's inspected and the remedy is made.
