Gone to the Dogs
A Stellantis brand decided to have some fun with one of its SUVs’ design to address growing emphasis on family pets.

The E-5008 Dog Edition concept includes a window headrest for dogs.

You’re reading this right: An SUV was designed for dogs.
Peugeot, the French brand of multinational automaker Stellantis, worked with the latter’s designers to craft a special dog edition of its electric E-5008.
Though the brand said the special vehicle wasn’t designed for production, one can imagine dog owners with money to burn knocking down its doors.
“Conceived as a true design laboratory, it celebrates the bond between dogs and their owners while exploring, with creativity, humour and boldness, new ways of imagining family mobility,” Peugeot said in a press release on the concept.
The company, acknowledging that many people today consider their pets “fully-fledged members of the family,” decided to adapt the phenomenon to one of its models, not only to accommodate a dog on the road but to make it the impetus for the five-seater’s design.
Citing a March Ifop survey conducted for a French animal-rights group, Peugeot said 64% of dog owners planned to take their dogs on vacation this year and that 60% said the pets are a deciding factor in their destination choices.
Stellantis designers approached the E-5008 creation through the eyes of a dog – how the quadruped sees, feels and otherwise experiences riding in a car. They then chose colors, materials and spatial and sound elements to optimize that experience.
“The dog is no longer just a passenger; it becomes the inspiration behind the entire onboard experience,” Peugeot said in announcing the Dog Edition Concept. “Watching the scenery go by, resting its head by the window, taking a nap after a long walk or curling up in its bed at the destination... these familiar moments inspired the designers…”
That means soothing yet stimulating shades of blue and yellow, soft, nonslippery materials, and a window headrest for dogs to stick their noses into bracing breezes. There are also a modular and portable dog mattress, built-in water and food bowls, a stowable pet fur dryer and a Peugeot pet toy. The features add to the brand’s existing dog guards and trunk protectors.
As if all that wasn’t enough to keep Fido and its people happy on the road, the E-5008 can also guide drivers to charging stations near parks to stretch their dogs’ legs.
Since canines can wander off at times, the SUV includes a Dog Retriever function that sounds an alarm to call a dog back to the E-5008, “recognize it upon its return and facilitate its re-entry into the vehicle,” in addition to Dog Guardian Mode with remote monitoring to warn their masters if they’re left alone in the vehicle.
