IIHS Names New Top Safety Winners
Three SUVs and one sedan received the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in its latest released rankings.

The BMW X1, a subcompact SUV, reached 'plus' status after receiving a 'good' rating in a front crash test, which it had not previously undergone.

The latest round of ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave four more 2026 models the Top Safety Pick+ award: the Audi A6, BMW X1, Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid.
To qualify for the “plus” award, vehicles need a “good” rating in the pedestrian front crash-prevention test, as well as an “acceptable” or “good” rating in the updated vehicle-to-vehicle front crash-prevention evaluation the nonprofit introduced last year.
Two models underwent redesigns for the current model year that earned them the “plus” award. The Audi A6, a gas-powered sedan, and the Mazda CX-5, a compact SUV, earned “good” ratings in the updated vehicle-to-vehicle front crash-prevention evaluation.
The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, a subcompact SUV, is a new launch and rated separately from the standard Crosstrek “because of differences in their structures and restraints,” the institute explained. It earned a “good” rating in the vehicle-to-vehicle evaluation.
The BMW X1, another subcompact SUV, reached “plus” status after receiving a “good” rating in a front crash test that it hadn't previously undergone, in which 40% of the front of a car strikes a barrier at 40 mph.
Five other models received new ratings but did not earn the Top Safety Pick or Pick+ award.
