The auto brand whose models best stand the test of time – and wear and tear – comes as no surprise.

World best-seller Toyota outsteers all competitors in terms of lineup longevity, with the longest-lasting model in the Sequoia SUV and 10 of the 25 most durable vehicles, according to iSeeCars.com. The company determined that the Sequoia has a 39% chance of lasting 250,000 miles, over eight times the industry average of about 5%.

Toyota’s lineup as a whole has about an 18% chance of reaching the eye-popping odometer high point, iSeeCars said.

Overall, SUVs like the Sequoia tend to last the longest of any vehicle type, taking up 11 spots in the study’s main ranking, the auto search engine and research provider found in compiling its various lists based on autos’ staying power. It also ranked autos based on vehicle design, plus included a hybrids list.

Methodology

The company said it sifted data on nearly 175 million vehicles to determine which tend to last at least a quarter-million miles. It took each unit’s average annual odometer reading to estimate the likelihood of it meeting a series of mileage levels. It has conducted the study since 2013.

After SUVs, sedans take up the second-most spots on the list at seven, followed by pickups with six, and one minivan.

At the brand level, Honda ranks second on the list with a fifth of the 25 longest-lasting models.

When considering power train type, hybrids made headway this year, with five models on the list, up from none just two years ago, iSeeCars said in its report.

The model in 25th place, the midsize luxury crossover Acura MDX, is still about twice as likely to reach 250,000 miles as the average vehicle, the research found, with a 9% chance.
